Boxer pays €5k to football fan he punched in pub

A BOXER who punched a rival football fan in the face and broke his jaw has been left with a clean record after he paid €5,000 in compensation to the victim.

Sean Turner (20) left the victim unable to speak following the pub assault. A court had heard the incident arose following a heated exchange between rival Liverpool and Manchester Utd supporters.

Turner, of Rathsallagh Avenue in Shankill, had admitted to seriously assaulting another young man at the Ramblers Rest pub in Ballybrack on October 26, 2010.

Judge Clare Leonard struck out the charge leaving Turner with a clean record after he co-operated with the probation services and paid €5,000 in compensation to the victim.

Dun Laoghaire District Court had heard that Turner punched the victim once in the face and left him with a broken jaw and injuries to his chin and lower lip. Garda Sergeant Peadar McCann had said the victim was out of work for six weeks following the assault, but he had recovered.

Defence solicitor Ronnie Lynam said both parties had been drinking and Turner regretted that he had been unable to control his anger.
