Council to trial monthly Canal Bank Market in Portobello
RATHMINES and Portobello could see a brand new monthly market following on from the success of Canalphonic this summer.
Dublin City Council is running a pilot Canal Bank Market on two upcoming dates to find out if there is an appetite for a regular market.
The market will be set up on the banks of the canal near the Portobello Harbour on August 15.
"We started off with the idea for a small festival and it was hugely successful so we are looking at hosting events all year long," Sid Daly from DCC and Canalphonic told the Herald.
"We want to show that the area is one that is crying out for a monthly market.
"Residents and businesses have been very supportive of the idea," he added.
"It's such a great area with lots of different types of people living there and we just want to encourage people to come and spend time there."
The market will be an eclectic mix of arts, crafts, books and records.
Organisers are keen to ensure that people will spend time in the area after visiting the market to boost local business.
Buskers will also perform to attract people into the harbour area during the day.
There will be entertainment in some local venues in the evening.
A second event will take place in September, whichwill be billed as the Canalphonic End of Summer festival. This will include the market, along with music in coffee shops and pubs around the local area in the afternoon and evening.
The first Canal Bank Market will kick off at 11am on Saturday, August 15.
