Copter rescues Howth fall man

A MAN was critically injured when he fell 100ft off a cliff in Howth.

Howth Coast Guard -- backed up by the local RNLI inshore lifeboat crew -- was involved in a dramatic search and rescue operation last night on the cliffs near the Bailey Lighthouse.

The coastguard volunteers were called in by local gardai around 5.30pm to assist in the search for the man, who was last seen near the cliffs beside the Howth Summit car park.

The unit began searching the cliffs along Howth Head as the Coast Guard helicopter, Rescue 116, was called in.

The missing man, who appeared to have fallen 100ft off the cliff path near the Bailey Lighthouse, was spotted at 6pm.

A rope rescue team was deployed and two cliff rescue climbers went to his aid while a paramedic was also lowered to the scene from the helicopter.

The man was winched aboard and brought to Tallaght Hospital, where he was in a critical condition today.
