Complaints from local traders over a Christmas market at St Stephen's Green last year have prompted Dublin City Council to shift its backing to a new Christmas village in the Docklands this festive season.

The kids might only be back in school, but the new 'I BELIEVE' venture was launched yesterday - even though it is still over three months until Santa will be making his list.

Basking in warm autumn sunshine. the giant Christmas gifts and Santa's gorgeous little elves looked a little out of place in the CHQ building in the Docklands, but when you are organising a massive Christmas village it seems there is no time to waste.

Focus

Spreading from George's Dock down the Quays towards the Point Village, the organisers hope that in time it will become an event that will not only bring people from all corners of Ireland, but from abroad as well.

The focus point will be a 50ft Christmas Tree inspired by the 82-year tradition behind the world-famous Rockefeller Tree in New York.

The Village hopes to add an estimated €8.4m to the economy, in addition to creating over 230 seasonal jobs and raising more than €350,000 for seven different charities.

"I go away to a different winter market every year but this year I won't have to. There will be one on my doorstep," said Lord Mayor Críona Ni Dhalaigh.

Padraic O'Kane, the CEO of Corporate.ie, who is also behind the venture, said the focus is on supporting Irish businesses, traders, craftspeople, producers and charities.

I BELIEVE will run for 28 days in the lead-up to Christmas from November 26 until December 23.
