Charity calls for help to build new centre
My Lovely Horse, which rescues neglected urban horses from Dublin West, is building its first-ever shelter and they need as much help as possible.
"We hope to have our new animal sanctuary and education centre next month and right now we have nothing.
"We're looking for plywood, corrugated roofing, bricks, old scaffolding and the use of building machinery and builders too," said Martina Kenny, one of the charity's founders.
The centre will be based in Kildare but all the animals rescued come from Dublin.
"We rescue neglected urban horses from places like Darndale, Ballyfermot, Finglas and Clondalkin and we help the local children care for the horses they have," Ms Kenny explained.
These horses are bought for as little as €5 and are kept in green fields, back gardens and sometimes in make-shift cages.
Last year 496 of them were seized in the area and 435 ended up being slaughtered. The charity aims to save the horses from slaughter.
