Challenge to Mass card ban Teen mugger on probation
THE owner of a Mass card distribution company has disputed a claim that he was not entitled to use the name of a suspended African priest on his cards.
Thomas McNally (right) disagreed that he could not use the name of Malawi-based Fr Oskar Mkondana who had been suspended by his bishop from celebration of Mass.
Mr McNally, head of Mass card producer MCC and his sister, Marie Reilly, a card retailer, have taken a High Court constitutional challenge against the State over the the new Charities Act, which outlaws the sale of Mass cards except through an arrangement with the Catholic church.
They say the Act is unconstitutional and unlawfully confers a monopoly on the sale of Mass cards to clerics of the Catholic Church or to persons approved by them.
The case, before Mr Justice John MacMenamin, continues.
