Carers honoured for tireless devotion
Carers from across Ireland have been rewarded for their tireless work at the Carer of the Year Awards 2015.
Single mum Jennifer Carroll, from Offaly, received the overall Carer of the Year Award, and said it was "lovely" to receive the prize from broadcasters Marty Whelan and Mary Kennedy.
Jennifer provides full-time care for her two children, Alex (8) and Ava (3), who were both born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a congenital bone disorder characterized by brittle bones that are prone to fracture.
John Fitzpatrick, from Finglas, was named Dublin North Carer of the Year after caring for his son, Stephen, who suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Stephen receives 12 hours of support from the HSE a week, but John (60) also works 15 hours as a taxi driver each week to make ends meet.
"The road we've been given, compared to [Stephen's] road, it's nothing," he said.
