Car chase man gets two years

A 20-year-old man who allowed himself to be carried in a stolen vehicle whose other occupants were involved in a shooting has been given a two- year sentence.

Stephen Collins, of Lodge Road, Westport, Co Mayo, who was 16 at the time, admitted allowing himself to be carried in the stolen car on September 27, 2006, in Crumlin, Dublin.

The last 15 months of the sentence were suspended.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that the Lancer car was stolen from outside a house on September 26, 2006.

Earlier, when the car had been approached by gardai a shot had been fired and an officer had been hit in the chest. Collins was caught later after a car chase.



Two killed in Cavan collision

TWO men have been killed in a collision in Cavan involving a van and a car. The fatal accident took place on the N3 near Lisduff, Virginia, Co Cavan last night.

The van driver, who was in his late 20s, and the passenger in his late 30s died. The driver of the car in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.



Opera legend dies aged 99

La Scala opera house has said Giulietta Simionato, an Italian mezzo-soprano whose instantly recognisable voice was wildly popular with audiences, has died. She would have turned 100 on May 12.

Simionato, a great friend of Maria Callas, died in Rome.
