A four-year-old boy is in critical condition after being knocked down in Cork after he apparently ran on to a road to escape a wasp.

The boy was knocked down by a passing car near St John's Well just off the Commons Road.

The accident happened at around 2pm.

It is understood that the child, who became scared of the wasp, ran straight on to the roadway.

Dragged

He had been playing with friends near a local green.

The boy was dragged for several metres after the impact by the car which then had to be lifted off him.

Emergency services were on the scene within minutes and the child was rushed to Cork University Hospital.

His condition was last night understood to be critical. His family were maintaining a vigil by bedside last night.

The female driver of the car was unhurt but was treated at the scene for extreme shock.
