Four juveniles were arrested after a car led gardai on a high-speed chase in the south of the capital, ramming a traffic corps jeep in the process.

The incident happened at around 4pm on Wednesday when officers responded to calls of a vehicle driving erratically in the Rathfarnham and Terenure areas.

Gardai took up pursuit and as two squad cars followed the car through a crossroads at the Dodder Park Road, a traffic corps jeep attempted to stop the speeding car by blocking the road.

However, the Mitsubishi Galant, which is not believed to be stolen, careered into the garda vehicle, leaving it incapacitated.

A video of the incident, caught on another vehicle's dash-cam, shows the car being pursued swerve through traffic at the junction before continuing along the R112 towards Springfield Avenue.

The garda jeep can be seen crossing the junction on the wrong side of the road, in an attempt to block the approaching Mitsubishi.

However, despite travelling towards the garda vehicle at speed, the driver of the car being pursued speeds up, crashing into the front of the jeep.

A loud bang can be heard on the dash-cam video, before the Mitsubishi swerves but manages to regain control and drive off.

A garda patrol car and an undercover unit can then be seen speeding through the junction behind the car, crossing it on the wrong side of the road in order to avoid traffic.

Up to five squad cars were involved in the pursuit. The car was eventually brought to a halt at the Terenure crossroads as three garda vehicles boxed it in.

Four juveniles were arrested at the scene. Three of these were released without charge a short time later. The 16-year-old driver was held in garda custody for dangerous driving, before being released under the Juvenile Diversion Programme.

There were no injuries reported.
