HUMAN remains found on a beach in England over a decade ago have been identified as those of a missing man from Tallaght.

John Crawford's remains were found at Annaside Beach in Cumbria on December 15, 2000.

Forensic tests eventually determined his identity and his family have been informed.

"We have been able to... bring closure to a family," said Cumbria police Detective Sergeant Colin Edgar.

A breakthrough was made when gardai located John Crawford's personal belongings and obtained a DNA sample which was found to be a match with the beach remains.

The inquest into his death may now be re-opened.
