WE'RE about to get a reprieve from the bitter cold and freezing temperatures of the last few days, say forecasters.

Day temperatures will return to double-digit numbers by Monday, according to Met Eireann.

This morning, road temperatures were as low as -6.6C in Co Louth, but the days are about to heat up, thanks to greater cloud coverage over the weekend.

Today will be generally dry with lows of 2C -- no frost is expected overnight in the east of the country.

"We had a short cold spell but it looks like it is gone for the mean time," Met Eireann forecaster Harm Luijkx said.

"Temperatures will rise over the weekend, with outbreaks of rain tomorrow. The rain will clear on Saturday evening, it's not going to be as cold as it was.

"Sunday will start with a bite, but there will be sunshine and by Monday, the weather will be mild, with highs of 10C around Dublin. In the days after that it will be windy and rainy at times."
