they weren't Bill's usual football pundits but his three grandchildren had plenty to say when they visited grandad in his World Cup studio.

Bill O'Herlihy-Ryan, aged four, arrived in the RTE studio wearing his German World Cup jersey along with sister Martha (6) and cousin Jack Conlon (5), who proudly wore his beloved Barcelona colours.

As Bill Senior counts down his final days as a television sports presenter, his grandchildren are showing a keen interest in the beautiful game.

The little threesome got a warm welcome as Bill and his team prepared to go live with a World Cup game.

Bill said grandson Jack loves the World Cup.

"Jack knows more about football than I do," the veteran broadcaster told The Herald.

"Jack is very clued-in to the World Cup. He knows all the players, he knows all the teams. He wanted to stay to watch the match."

The visit was a family affair with Bill's two daughters Jill and Sally bringing the kids into the studio.

Bill said he was glad to be retiring after four decades in front of the cameras.

"I'm sure I'll miss it. But it's time to go and I'm quite happy," he said.
