'ban faceless cyber attacks'
VICIOUS cyber abuse of politicians is a worsening problem with the public spending cutbacks and impending abortion legislation.
And it is believed that abuse on social media websites may have increased pressure on Minister Shane McEntee, who took his own life.
Following his death there are growing calls to curb such cyber attacks by anonymous users of social media.
Today, Fine Gael TD John O'Mahony, a friend of the late minister, said social media could be "difficult" for politicians to deal with.
Former Taoiseach John Bruton, a friend of Mr McEntee, who replaced the former Taoiseach as Fine Gael TD for Meath, called for an end to the practice of messages from anonymous people being read out on TV and radio.
Taoiseach Enda Kenny told colleagues last week he believes he will become the target for more abuse as relations between church and State rapidly deteriorate over the abortion row.
