Balbriggan: Summer fun with community festival
The clocks have only just gone forward and the town of Balbriggan is already planning its big summer festival.
The dates for the Balbriggan Summerfest have just been announced - Saturday, May 23 to Sunday, May 31 - and everyone is being asked to get involved.
In its sixth year, this year's festival is already taking shape.
"We have the guts of the programme like Balbriggan's Got Talent, an aquathon, the Balbriggan Bake Off, a sand castle competition, a pet show, fireworks on the beach and we have a duck derby," explained Grainne Maguire, who is on the festival committee.
"We're looking for groups, no matter what it is, just anyone who wants to get involved. If the local boxing club wants to come and put on a fight for example, we have a stage."
The eight-day festival, which has always been blessed with pre-Leaving Certificate good weather takes place in the car-park at the beach in Balbriggan.
Charities are also on-board.
"The local cancer group is attempting to do a world record of rock-the-boat and if any other charity wants to do the same, they are all welcome too," said Grainne.
The RNLI boat will come into the harbour and the parish priest comes down and blesses all the boats, it's a huge programme," said Ms Maguire.
There will also been a carnival this year and live music and Ms Maguire said "there's space for everybody".
The needs of smaller people are also being tended to as there will be a Lego day weaved into the programme, to keep kids of all ages happy. The overall aim of the festival is to showcase all that Balbriggan has to offer.
If any local group or sports club wants to run an events they can send an email to email@example.com to get involved.
