Bacon painting could fetch €48m

Paintings by some of the masters of modern art are expected to fetch more than £200m (€272m) when they go under the hammer at an auction next month.

Works by Dublin-born Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol and Lucian Freud will feature at Sotheby's Contemporary Art Evening Auction on July 1. Topping the bill is one of Bacon's Pope paintings, inspired by the work of Diego Velazquez, which is expected to sell for £35m (€48m), having been painted for his breakthrough Tate exhibition in 1962.
