THE ecstasy experienced by hero race walker Rob Heffernan is set to continue when his wife gives birth to their third child.

The Cork man's proud family have revealed that Rob (35) and his wife, Marian, are expecting a baby later this year. The couple embraced at the finish line in the Moscow arena yesterday as Rob became Ireland's third world champion.

After experiencing the agony of fourth place at the London Olympics, the father-of-two from Togher woke this morning knowing that he is officially the best walk racer in the world.

And his incredible success at the World Athletics Championships has lifted the nation, with President Michael D Higgins leading the tributes.

"Rob came so close to success in the London Olympics and now, through hard work and dedication, he has achieved all that he deserves," he said.

Marian said: "I knew he'd do it. 12km out, he had a look in his eye that he was going to nail it."

His sister Rhona said Rob's late mother would be brimming with pride, adding:"She was obviously looking down."
