Armed robbers escape with cash after holding up busy waterpark
A children's waterpark and activity centre was thrown into chaos after four armed robbers stormed the place.
The incident happened at the Funtasia Waterpark in Drogheda just after 6pm on Sunday.
Gardai said four masked men held up the premises, with one of them carrying a firearm.
The place was busy, with many children and parents there at the time.
The robbers are understood to have got in and out of Funtasia, which is on the Donore Road, within a matter of minutes.
They escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Gardai are investigating the incident and have interviewed witnesses, while also checking CCTV at the Funtasia centre.
They are asking anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the vicinity to contact them.
The Funtasia Waterpark also provides a bowling alley, crazy golf, rock climbing, video games, simulators and a casino.
It was open for business as usual yesterday, with droves of children arriving in organised groups and with their families.
No one at the waterpark responded to queries from the Herald yesterday.
Local councillor Frank Godrey said armed crimes were becoming "far too frequent" in the area.
"It's terrifying for the people that go there to enjoy the facilities," he said.
"It's a family place and a lot of the families from this area go there for the day and they really enjoy it.
"There's a lot of places now being targeted and it seems that there's nobody safe wherever they go.
"It has to be terrifying for those people that were working there too.
"It's very serious and you hope that these people that did this will be brought to justice as soon as possible."
