Keep the umbrellas within arms reach for the rest of the summer, as the wet weather looks set to remain.

There is no heat wave on the horizon this summer and weather experts predict the next two months will be a washout.

June was wet and July and August aren't expected to be any drier. While the sun will peak out, umbrellas will also be out in force this summer as the weather stays unpredictable.

This week is set to be a mixed bag and it will be fairly typical of the summer to come. This evening will be showery but warm, and tomorrow will herald in a good blast of sunshine. But by Wednesday the rain clouds will have gathered over the country again.

Last month was a soggy one with the wettest June day in half a century recorded at Johnstown Castle in Co Wexford.

Most of the 30 days of last month suffered showers, many of them heavy and June 21, the longest day of the year, was by far the wettest all over the country.

Not only did the skies open last month it was also the coolest June for between six and nine years in many places with ground frosts recorded in some inland areas at times.

And the long-term forecasters have warned that the weather picture for the rest of the summer looks equally unpredictable.
