Angry workers block city
Dublin city centre was being brought to a standstill this afternoon by angry workers rallying against the Government's approach to the economic crisis.
The mass protests were taking place as it emerged former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern received a €111,235 pension payment last year, on top of his salary, following his resignation as Taoiseach.
Thousands of anti-pension-levy workers, including teachers, nurses, civil servants and gardai, began gathering from lunchtime and were due to leave Parnell Square at 2pm.
They were highlighting the impact of the recession on workers.
The revelation of Mr Ahern's pension further fuelled workers' anger over the state of the economy and the pay cuts and penalties falling on workers as opposed to politicians and bankers.
The rally was due to move down O'Connell Street and Nassau Street before culminating in Merrion Square.
ICTU president Patricia McKeown and general secretary David Begg planned to address the crowds.
The national demonstration was sparked by the Government's decision to suspend the wage agreement and impose the unpopular pension levy from next month.
