Almost 29,000 burglaries and related crimes were recorded by the Garda in the year to June.

Data from the force, published by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), showed it was one of the biggest crime categories, along with thefts which totalled more than 77,000.

The number of murders and manslaughters has fallen in the same period with 60 recorded over the 12 months.

These are the first official statistics since the CSO updated its records after controversy over under-reporting of crime by the Garda.

Based on samples of figures from 2011, a review by the statutory body found the force was under-reporting 12 of the 14 crime categories - with murders and manslaughters and kidnapping and related offences being the exceptions.

The CSO review said the Garda had under-reported crime by an average of 18%.

In a note on this latest report of recorded Garda crime figures, the CSO said the findings from its review should be taken into account when interpreting the data.

The records showed in the 12 months to June:

:: 16,054 attempts or threats to murder, assaults, harassments and related offences were recorded - a 10.4% increase.

:: Included in those figures were 10,748 assaults.

:: There were 28,830 burglary and related offences, an increase of 8.4%.

:: 2,072 incidents of sex offences were recorded.

:: There were 5,337 fraud, deception and related offences.
