Adland set to party as awards season gets under way
Awards season is in full flow with more gongs being handed over than standing ovations at a party ard fheis.
MediaVest's Michael Clancy reckons 1,545 people work in advertising in Ireland and each year there are 17 different shows with 944 awards.
He says if someone works in adland and they haven't got an award recently, they should be trembling in their tuxedo.
Speaking at the Institute of Advertising Practitioners in Ireland (IAPI) Rant Night, Clancy estimates the industry spends €3,200 per person per award ceremony when time, entry fees, hair, make-up, clothes and the prices of Jagerbombs on the night are totted up.
Last week, An Post staged the Smart awards in the Mansion House, with Javelin the night's big winner.
Tomorrow, the Doubletree at Hilton hotel - formerly the Burlington - hosts the Marketing Institute's All Ireland Marketing Awards (AIMS).
The main function room will be full to capacity as RTE news anchor Bryan Dobson (pictured) faces the challenge of trying to keep audience attention while announcing the various winners in each category.
Among the 18 categories will be awards for best ad campaign, market research, PR and sponsorship.
But perhaps most interest will focus on two gongs - the best brand campaign and the marketing team of the year.
The five marketing team finalists are Electric Ireland, led by Lisa Browne; Kerry Foods/April Redmond; Liberty Insurance/Annette Ni Dháthlaoi, Lidl Ireland/Matthias Wenk and SuperValu, led by current Marketer of the Year, Ray Kelly.
No doubt, all the finalists have the champagne on ice.
