A CARER, who unlawfully claimed more than €14,000 in benefits, has been given six months to repay the money.

Angela Butchart, 48, from Old Moore Road, Ballyfermot, Dublin, pleaded guilty to failing to notify the Department of Social Protection of her change of circumstances, that she had got married in 2012, which affected her entitlement to the deserted wife allowance.

Judge John O'Neill heard at Dublin District Court that she received €14,300 and after making some repayments she still owed €12,912 to the Department.

Judge O'Neill noted she is paying back €200 a month that she is in work and hopes to be able to increase the repayments. He adjourned the case until September.
