a car which failed to stop for gardai collided with a Luas yesterday, before the driver fled the scene.

Luas services were disrupted yesterday evening following a collision between a car and a tram in the Fettercairn area of Tallaght in Dublin.

It is understood that the car, which was travelling at a high speed, failed to stop for gardai before colliding with the Luas, which was travelling from the Point towards Saggart after 6pm yesterday.

The Herald understands the individual driving the car then fled the scene, leaving the damaged vehicle behind.

No one was seriously injured as a result of the incident but it is understood two women requested an ambulance shortly after the collision.

Last night a spokesperson for Luas said that there was "no significant damage" done to the tram and that all passengers were uninjured.

The incident caused Luas services to run only between Tallaght and the Point and all services from Belgard to Saggart were temporarily out of service. Within an hour the damaged tram was removed from the tracks, and services were returned to normal.

Gardai are investigating the incident.
