A Dublin-based organised crime gang has been dealt a massive blow after elite gardai seized around half-a-million euro worth of drugs.

The discovery was made during a search of a premises at Coolquay, The Ward, Co Dublin on Easter Sunday. Specialist detectives from the national Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, assisted by local detectives and gardai from the Finglas District Drugs Unit, carried out the raid.

Officers recovered approximately 7kgs of cocaine, subject to analysis, with an estimated street value of €500,000.

Raids

The Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, headed by Chief Superintendent Michael O'Sullivan, was formed last year in an amalgamation of the Garda National Drug Unit and the Organised Crime Unit.

Detectives from the Finglas area have also been hugely effective in recent months in carrying out a number of significant raids on Ireland's largest organised crime gang. Several million euro worth of illegal drugs - including cannabis, heroin and cocaine - have been seized in the north Dublin area.

A number of the recovered consignments are believed to be linked to the Kinahan cartel, with the organised crime gang losing millions in potential profit.

"This seizure is regarded as a significant blow against organised crime and it will seriously disrupt the sale and supply of cocaine in the Dublin region," a spokesman for An Garda Siochana said.

"These operations use advanced analytical and intelligence methods to disrupt criminals and dismantle their networks. Drug seizures play a critical role in targeting the livelihood of criminals and reducing their ability to carry out illegal activities," he added.

No arrests have been made yet in relation to Sunday's seizure and investigations are continuing. This is the third major drug seizure in the last number of days.

Arrested

In unrelated incidents, gardai last Friday arrested two men and seized drugs worth €120,000 in searches on Dublin's south side. Two men have been charged in connection with this seizure.

Last Wednesday gardai from Store Street Garda Station discovered €115,000 worth of cocaine and crack cocaine in connected searches. Two false passports, mixing agents, scales and cash were also seized.
