Marching bands, classic cars and Harley-Davidsons are taking over parts of Dublin today for America's Independence Day.

More than 3,500 people - including the new Lord Mayor of Dublin, Criona Ni Dhalaigh - will take part in a parade around East Wall, Ringsend and Sheriff Street to celebrate July 4.

Celebrations kicked off last night, with US Ambassador Kevin O'Malley (inset) hosting a reception at his residence in the Phoenix Park.

Today sports groups, Irish dancers and girl guides will take part in the party organised by the East Wall Recreational Centre, to recognise all the people around the area that have emigrated to place such as the US.

"We decided that it'd be nice to do something like this in solidarity with all of these young people that were from East Wall, Sheriff Street, Pearse Street and Irishtown.

"A lot of people have left, so we thought Independence Day would be a good day to do it," said organiser Anthony O'Callaghan.

The parade begins at Sean O'Casey's pub in East Wall at 2pm and proceeds from the event will be donated to Temple Street Children's Hospital.
