A 10-year-old mini bus is being used to carry dangerous criminals including a suspected killer from jail to court.

The minibus has been hired by the Irish Prison Service to take prisoners to and from Limerick prison.

On Tuesday, it was used to transport a 30-year-old man who is on remand in relation to the stabbing death of another man.

The suspect has been locked up in Limerick Prison since gardai told a court they feared he would flee the jurisdiction if granted bail.

Last night, a spokesman for the Irish Prison Service confirmed that the mini bus was being used to bring prisoners to court.

"Each prisoner is risk- assessed and appropriate staffing is provided to ensure the safety of the escort," the spokesman said.
