'Jail greedy bankers for state we are in'
Wednesday September 30 2009
GREEDY bankers should be locked up behind bars, according to respected economist David McWilliams.
Mr McWilliams, who predicted in 2003 that the current recession was coming, says the Irish people have been "duped" by bankers who profited from the hard work of ordinary people.
And the author and TV presenter, who has written a series of successful books on Ireland's economic problems, believes that those responsible for the nation's financial woes should "go to prison".
He said: "If Irish people believe the hype, that it was just about all of us going on second holidays, they've been duped twice.
"They've been duped in the boom and in the bust.
"This was a crime. In any other era, the people who are guilty would go to prison but they won't."
Mr McWilliams (42) added that the Government should share responsibility.
He added: "In bigger countries they just get kicked out. 'Sorry lads, you screwed up, now off you go'.
"They're milking money out of the country, they're hijacking a whole generation and we're doing nothing about it."
