Friday November 27 2009
THE son of Fianna Fail TD Sean Fleming has been remanded in custody following an appearance at a district court.
Peter Fleming (19), with an address at Silveracre, Castletown, Co Laois, appeared before a special sitting of Portlaoise District Court last Sunday.
He faced three charges of indecency, assault and robbery at Tesco car park, Portlaoise, last Saturday, November 21st, and was remanded in custody.
Yesterday, Fleming appeared before Portlaoise District Court again, where he was further remanded in custody.
Serious
Judge Gerard Haughton granted the defendant free legal aid in the case.
Inspector Martin Cashen asked that Fleming be remanded in custody saying: "It was an assault on a female. The charges are a serious series of incidents and on that basis I am looking for a remand in custody for one week."
Defending solicitor Declan Breen said he was seeking bail for his client.
He said it would will be the defendant's "intention to enter a plea to the three charges before the court".
He told Judge Haughton that the defendant had appeared before him as a juvenile "with exactly the same problems he has now".
Judge Haughton remanded Fleming in custody to reappear at Portlaoise district court on next Thursday, December 3.
Deputy Fleming was in court during the short hearing.
