A young Dublin teacher turned beauty entrepreneur has been earning additional income by setting up a YouTube channel to give make-up tips.

Amy Dillon (26) from Swords is a newly qualified teacher, working on a temporary contract.

The Dubliner said she was worried about meeting mortgage payments amid the current economic downturn and happened upon making beauty videos for an online community site through YouTube as a means of escaping from negative news.

Amy, whose parents are both hairdressers, said that she never dreamed she would be pocketing cash for talking about products that she loves.

"I had no idea that there was such a community online and I got a little addicted," Amy said. "I made my first video in my living room with my cheap digital camera."

"I was making videos for a few months and then in June I received an invitation from YouTube to become part of their partner programme."

Google Ads now pay Amy every time someone clicks on a rollover ad, which has been placed at the beginning of her videos.

She makes a video every 48 hours and updates her website twice a day, while still juggling her career in teaching.

"It's one of those things that have spiralled. I'm just getting my head around it now," she added. "When I started getting paid I couldn't believe it, I thought it was amazing."
