SALES of gay and lesbian wedding cards are booming in Ireland -- despite the fact that same-sex couples cannot get married here.

Dublin's oldest department store, Arnotts, is doing a roaring trade in the cards even though Ireland remains one of the few EU states where gay marriages are illegal.

The cards celebrate the weddings of "Mr and Mr" and "Mrs and Mrs". Two cowboys feature on other cards bearing the slogan "Congratulations on tying the knot, dudes".

Arnotts said the cards are popular with customers wanting to congratulate friends and family who got married in Northern Ireland and Britain.

The British-based greeting card franchise Paperchase stocks the cards in Arnotts.

Karen Lumsden, manager of the franchise, said the cards are particularly popular for people celebrating civil partnerships happening in Belfast.
