Zen and the art of shaving

The experts at Knights Barbers tell us how to ensure the ultimate shave every time:
1 Shave after you shower A man's facial hair is as strong as copper wire. Bristles that have absorbed water are easier to cut. A pre-shave oil or cream will prepare tough beards.
2 Use a shaving brush A shaving brush lifts the beard from the face so that a closer shave can be experienced. The brush also has an exfoliating effect which, as any woman will tell you, is good for the skin. . . just in case you care.
3 Use a good shaving cream Traditional shaving foams can strip the skin of natural oils. Shaving creams and soaps work best if used with a brush. They help the blade glide over the skin preventing "drag" which causes a rash.
4 Use a sharp blade You should barely feel the blade passing over the skin and cutting the beard.
5 Rinse Clean residual shaving cream with warm water, then splash the face with cold water to close your pores. Pat the face dry with a towel.
6 Moisturise An after-shave balm or cream used after shaving will replace moisture lost and help the skin heal.
Avoid alcohol-based aftershave immediately after shaving.
