Yvonne Connolly: ‘I feel I lost my identity as a woman, as an individual’
Yvonne Connolly reveals that she is happier than ever after finding her feet in the working world and a loving partner in film director John Conroy.
The former model wed boyband singer Ronan Keating in 1998, when she was just 24-years-old.
The mum-of-three was happily married to Keating for 17 years, preferring to keep a low profile as she raised their children in a luxury mansion in Malahide, North County Dublin.
“I made the decision not to work, to step away from the limelight when I had my first child,” she reveals in the September issue of IMAGE Magazine
“I turned down a lot of work during those years. In hindsight, I feel I lost my identity as a woman, as an individual."
“I realise now that my children would have been just as well brought up had I worked,” she admits.
The couple parted ways in 2011, when news of Ronan’s affair with backing singer Francine Cornell came into the public domain.
In the ensuing four years, the 41-year-old has been busier than ever, as she carves her own niche as an aspiring chef and columnist.
Aside from her stint on Celebrity MasterChef Ireland and cooking slots on Ireland AM and UTV Ireland’s Good Morning Britain, she also regularly interviews celebrities for a weekly women’s magazine and writes in the Irish Independent WEEKEND Magazine.
“I was very happy to take my husband’s name when I married. We all think when we marry it will last forever. I do wish that I’d kept working, though, that I’d had more confidence in myself, as a mother and as a woman,” she said, on the decision to revert back to using her maiden name of Connolly.
Yvonne, mum to 16-year-old Jack, 14-year-old Missy and nine-year-old Ali, is currently in a relationship with film director John Conroy.
The blond beauty maintains that they are “completely committed”.
“I love being in a partnership where we both consider what each other does important,” she says of the romance.
“I’m at a really good stage in my life now,” she concludes.
