Week 4: The world's best reason to spend money on shoes
Walk, jog or run, finding the right footwear is key says Sabrina Carey, Elverys Sports POWER Team Leader
Regardless of whether you aim to walk, jog or run you cannot do so without utilizing your feet.
So finding the right protection and comfort for them is a must. At Elverys Sports you will not only find a great selection of styles, colours and prices but also expertise and guidance towards the right pair for your unique needs. Here are some tips on what to look for when buying runners.
Out with the Old
Cushioning in most walking or running shoes only lasts around 800km. A top tip is to make a note of the date when you buy your next new pair so you can track when you should replace them. Watch for wear on the sole of the shoe, when the rubber is clearly reduced it is time to change.
Function over fashion
As tempting as it is to buy shoes that match a favourite outfit, always opt for comfort over style and buy something specifically designed for the job at hand. It won't matter how super cool you look if your feet are killing you.
Take your time
It's worth setting aside some time to purchase new footwear. This will allow time to ask questions, make an informed choice and really get what you want. Think of it like buying a car - you wouldn't do it in five minutes, and with any luck your new shoes will be taking you on just as many journeys.
As there are different foot types, so too there are different footwear styles. To find out if you are a neutral, supinator or over-pronator call into selected Elverys Sports stores and complete free Gait and FootBalance analyses.
The manner in which the foot initially contacts the ground will determine the amount and type of cushioning best suited. Determining if you heel, mid or fore foot strike can be done during a Gait analysis.
A short video clip is recorded from behind while walking or running on a treadmill. The movements are analysed and foot type and strike are determined. From this the most appropriate footwear is recommended for your individual needs.
FootBalance provides a personalised foot analysis which can determine arch type and assess foot alignment. 100pc customised insoles are moulded as part of the process delivering a perfect fit, support in a neutral foot position and correct body posture when added to your footwear.
It is advisable to leave about a thumb's width between the top of your big toe and the end of the shoe. It's perfectly normal to wear a running shoe that is at least half a size larger than your everyday shoes.
Nobody knows more about what feels right on your feet than you do and there is no single 'best shoe'. Biomechanics, weight, training surfaces and shape of feet mean that one person's ideal shoe can be terrible for another.
So if anyone complains about you arriving home with boxes of new shoes again, tell them "footwear is an essential expense".
