People hate me for how I speak, reveals Rachel Allen
Celebrity chef Rachel Allen has revealed she has had to put up with "hurtful" comments over her accent.
The TV star (43) admitted people are sometimes rude to her and she can't help but take the nasty remarks to heart.
"It's lovely when people stop me on the street to say how much they loved the show or the book, but it can also be quite offensive when people think they know you and have a go," she said.
"Just the other day I was told someone hated me because of the way I speak. People don't realise how hurtful it can be."
The mum of three said that while she has had to grow a thick skin to deal with criticism, she has no plans to change who she is "just to please everyone".
"I'm still quite sensitive, but I have got a bit tougher," she told the RTE Guide.
"I find it endearing when people are soft and sensitive, which I try to be, so I'm not going to toughen up too much. Anyway, it would be more contrived if I put on a different act to please everyone.
"I believe it's nice to be nice. I was brought up to treat others the way you'd like to be treated yourself."
Rachel also revealed she would love to do more humanitarian work after she visited India last year with GOAL.
Despite her sensitive nature, she managed to stay strong while helping the needy and admitted it would have been "ridiculous and selfish " of her to let her emotions get the better of her.
"They don't need our sympathy, they need our empathy and support. I'd love to do some more work out there," she said.
