If you want to pick one of the retro trends to adopt this season, it has to be the A-line skirt. It's one of those cyclical favourites, largely due to the fact that it flatters most shapes and is available in various lengths. It cleverly disguises hips and thighs too and, accessorised correctly, can look très elegant.

Carrying on from last season, this autumn the A-line comes in every variation - denim, leather, suede and corduroy versions have all been spotted on various catwalks and thankfully the high-street shopping options are just as plentiful. With celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow, Toni Garrn, Alexa Chung and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley jumping on the A-line trend, it's time for you to make a beeline for the hottest skirt of the season. But first, how to wear it…

The Stylist's Fashion Take

Keep it simple and elegant by playing with colours, tones and textures. Rich fabrics like suede and corduroy, and tones like burgundy and tan will keep it smart but interesting.

This, right, skirt is a little shorter so counter that by choosing full coverage for legs and your top half.

A modest and on-trend polo neck coupled with a suede biker jacket give the look immediate structure as well as coverage while black opaque tights make the micro-length more demure and accessible for all.

Finally, the simple, unfussy black ankle boots work to elongate the legs.
