'To sleep, perchance to dream', wondered Shakespeare's Hamlet in his 'to be or not to be' speech. But times were simpler then and the modern version might well be: 'to sleep, perchance to lie there tossing and turning all night, worrying about tomorrow's finance meeting'.

If you're of the latter persuasion then you might be pleased to know that the beauty biz has stepped up to the mark and an increasing number of brands are releasing relaxation and sleep-promoting products.

But do they work? While no cosmetic product can offer the efficacy of a sleeping tablet, they do contain relaxing and stress-relieving ingredients, plus their use promotes a night-time routine that can help settle you and mentally prepare you for sleep. Here are three to try.

LOVELY LAVENDER Pre-slumber, chill out with a relaxing essential oil blend. Eve Taylor's 100pc plant wax candle in Lavender, €17.50, at Nue Blue Eriu, is ideal.

PULSE POINT Calm a stressed brain with Molton Brown's Cedrus Temple Soother, €25, part of their Sleep collection. At 21 Wicklow Street and Dundrum Town Centre.

DREAM CREAM Find the new Night Health Bedtime Face Cream, €69.50, by Origins at Clerys, Arnotts and House of Fraser Dundrum. In addition to the skincare benefits you'd expect, it contains an essential oil mix designed to encourage tranquillity.
