I got a call from The Robert Chambers Hair Academy - would Miss Thrifty like to be a model?
I admit that saving money by being a hair model is not exactly a polar expedition, so the fact that I lost sleep over it says a lot about me.
My immediate thoughts were those of incompetent girls doing razor cuts and going too far with pink hair die, but I said yes anyway.
I was relieved to see the salon full and with another four women in front of me also happy to put their hair in the hands of students.
Stacy, my hairdresser confirmed that I'd booked a colour and a cut and then began a thorough and friendly consultation. Was I happy with my style? Was I happy with my colour? How much would be getting the chop? I decided on golden tones, a simple trim, and the odd lowlight to blend. Stacy began to work with calm efficiency.
Two and a half hours later I stepped into the storm-lashed streets of Dublin a happier and more confident person. A girl possessed with the power to deliver admiring glances from people who appreciate that a life without split ends is a noble one, that a life with blonde highlights is a happy one, and that to have your 'new do' blown about by the worst storms in ages is just unfortunate timing.
Why is it we will happily put our lives at the hands of learner drivers, and our health in the hands of student doctors, but the thought of trusting someone with our hair brings us out in a nervous rash? Having someone who is supervised and who cares about what they’re doing is surely the key to happy hair.
If you need to dip your toe in the water before you take the hair modeling plunge, booking a blow dry will only cost you a tenner!
Miss Thrifty tried the Robert Chambers School of Hairdressing. Salons are on Grafton Street and Upper Liffey Street, Dublin. For more information on being a model phone Peter Stephenson on 01 872 3663.
