DIET and fitness apps DO help you lose weight.

An American study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine is the first study to show that technology added to an existing programme of weight loss can produce sustained weight loss.

Using a mobile app that tracks eating and activity helped people lose an average of 15 pounds and keep it off for at least a year, according to the study.

Meningitis link to smoking in pregnancy

Smoking during pregnancy can treble the baby's chance of developing meningitis, researchers warn, and children exposed to smoke from a parent's cigarettes at home are twice as likely to have the deadly illness.

It's thought that passive smoking gradually weakens children's immune systems, making them more susceptible to the illness.
