Claudia Carroll: A man asked me for €5k loan after just one date
Author Claudia Carroll has revealed that a man she met online asked her for a loan of €5,000 - after only one date.
The Fair City actress immersed herself in the world of online dating as part of research for her book, Meet Me in Manhattan.
"I met this guy on a dating site and we went for a coffee. He was nice and I thought maybe he was a slow-burner," she told the Herald.
"He called me after we'd met this one time for half-an-hour to ask me for a loan of five grand.
"First of all, as if anyone has that kind of money lying around, and as if I'd give it to a total stranger.
"But I wondered how many women he was saying this to that were possibly saying yes. It's scary."
The 47-year-old, who has been single for several years, said she is fed up with modern dating.
"Online dating has transformed dating culture over the past few years," she said.
"All you have to go on is a picture, but god knows who they really are.
"There's a lot to be said for the old-fashioned way of a man spilling a pint all over you in a busy pub and your eyes lock and you start chatting.
"I still dip in and out of the dating sites because that's the main place to meet people."
Not one to rest on her laurels, Claudia is working on her 13th novel which is due out next year.
She was speaking at the launch of the annual MS Readathon, which starts on October 9.
