Cannon shots to lead flotilla
A FLOTILLA of period boats will sail into Howth on Sunday as part of a spectacular re-enactment of events when the Asgard landed 100 years ago.
Paddy Barry, chairman of the Asgard 100 group, said that the Asgard 3 vessel will start off at Ireland's Eye, with a cannon shot fired off by the artillery of the army.
"It will lead the flotilla and as it approaches, the Army Number 1 Band will be playing. Another gun will fire as she lands at exactly 1 o'clock," he said.
There will also be a re-enactment of the collection of the arms, including people dressed in Irish Volunteer uniforms.
Paddy said that planning for the event began last September with help from the Department of the Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.
