Baby girl for Olympic couple Derval O'Rourke and Peter O'Leary
Olympians Derval O’Rourke and Peter O’Leary have brought home something more special than any medal – a new baby.
Former hurdle champion Derval announced that their daughter, Dafne, was delivered earlier this week.
“Hugely grateful to all the amazing staff in CUMH. Delighted to welcome baby Dafne O’Leary to the world a few days ago,” Derval said.
The Corkwoman, who retired from international athletics last year, met her husband Peter on a return flight from the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
O’Leary (32), also from Cork, competed for Ireland in sailing.
Derval had said that she was thinking about “unusual” baby names, but that there had been some disagreement with her other half.
“It’s a massive decision, because a strong name is really important,” Derval said at the time. “My husband and I really can’t settle on a name, but hopefully we’ll have something by the time the baby arrives.
“I think because I have a bit of an unusual name, I’d like our baby to have an unusual name too. I just love reading up about names and what the celebs have called their babies.”
New mum Derval (32) is a two-time European silver medallist – her biggest triumph came when she won gold at the world indoor championships in Moscow in 2006.
