Irish actor Stuart Townsend has been out of the public eye because he has a "secret family", his brother Dylan has revealed.

The Howth native is known for his off-screen exploits as he dated Oscar winner Charlize Theron for 10 years before they split up.

"I'm really happy for him ... he's been off the map for the past year," Dylan told the Herald.

"He's in Costa Rica now, he's bought land in Costa Rica and he hasn't been living in LA for the past six months - he's got a whole new family, yeah and no one knows about it.

"He's about to have a second child and he's fallen in love with a Costa Rican girl as well, and he has his piece of land, so yeah, totally new journey for him," he added.

Self-proclaimed hipster Dylan (30) was speaking at the launch of RTE's new reality show, Exiles which follows a bunch of young people hoping to make it in Vancouver.

While most of the cast, including Dylan, are delighted at the opportunity and exposure appearing in such a show brings, others were not so pleased.

Cast members India Dawson (21), Jade Stone (25) and Sean McConnon (21) - a great grandson of 1913 Lockout hero Jim Larkin - were unimpressed with how they appear on the show and the lack of help they got in Canada.

"It's not scripted but the edits were terrible the way a scene was made.

"I think Dylan says 'Me and India went home together'. Well of course we did, we were living in the same house," said India.

RTE disputes the edit claim.

The other cast members are Made In Chelsea star Nicola Hughes (25) and musicians George Hutton (27) and Dean Rossiter.
