I haven't joined Newstalk to be the 'token' woman - new host Colette Fitzpatrick
TV and radio host Colette Fitzpatrick insists she hasn't joined Newstalk to make up the numbers as she prepares for her new radio show.
The journalist is set to join the station's male-heavy line up, but she says she's far from a "token woman".
"I'd hate for anyone to think that this was a case of 'we need to get a woman on air, so we'll get Colette'," she told the Herald.
"Without bragging, I think I've proven myself in journalism over the last couple of decades."
It was announced yesterday that the Tipperary native will front her own weekend morning radio show for Newstalk, starting this Sunday at 9am.
While the one-hour slot will mean mum-of-two Colette is busier than ever with work, she won't let it interfere with her family life.
The TV3 news anchor (41) is already a doting mum to children Milo (4) and Olivia (3).
"It's additional work but it's something I'm looking forward to.
"I finish at 10am on a Sunday so as far as I'm concerned I'll have my Sundays with my family," the Herald columnist said.
"I'll be up and at it on air before they're even out of the bed in my house. They won't even know I'm gone."
However, she and her husband Niall McDermott won't be expanding their brood.
Instead, Colette is happy to put some extra focus on her broadcasting career as her young family grows up.
"I'm not having any more babies. I'm too old," Colette said.
"We're just getting to that stage where it's getting better. We're getting to the point where we're out of bottles, out of bed-wetting and nappies.
"We're out of the trenches. [Parenting] gets easier as they get older."
