Blathnaid NiChofaigh: 'It's hard for women to stay on air'
She has carved out a successful career in broadcasting, but RTE presenter Blathnaid NiChofaigh has admitted it can be a struggle making it in the industry as a woman.
The mother of four, who recently started presenting a weekend morning radio show on Raidio na Gaeltachta, said women tend to go in and out of fashion in the business and can be disheartened by this.
"It can be a very frustrating place to work for women, especially women with families," the redhead told the Herald.
"You're either in vogue or you're not and that's just human nature."
Blathnaid (inset) believes there should be more women in RTE, especially when it comes to contributors.
However, the gaeilgoir also believes that talent should come before gender.
"It's a tough one - I mean do you want women in certain roles because they're women or do you want women in roles because they're right for the role," she said.
"I think female voices aren't always heard in terms of contributors and we should probably look at that."
