Thousands of One Direction fans devastated as idols cancel gig at last minute
THOUSANDS of One Direction fans were left disappointed after the heart-throb boy-band cancelled their Belfast concert minutes before they were due on stage.
An announcer told more than 12,000 stunned fans at the sell-out gig that it had been cancelled as Liam Payne had taken ill.
A statement also went up on screens at the SSE Belfast Arena saying: "The show has been cancelled as Liam has taken ill, and whilst not serious, he is unable to perform tonight. Please hold on to your tickets. A further statement will be made in the morning.
"The band apologise to the fans and wish Liam better."
The band's official Twitter account had posted "Belfast! Are you ready? #OnTheRoadAgain2015" just hours earlier.
Both Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson last night took to social media to say sorry.
"Deepest apologies to everyone at the show tonight... very disappointed. Unfortunately these things happen. We're very sorry. H," Styles tweeted.
"We're so, so sorry for what happened tonight, it was out of our control!," Tomlinson said.
"Lots of love to Liam and thank you for being so understanding."
Fans, some of whom travelled from the South, have expressed their disappointment online.
"Yikes lots of sad fans heading home tonight," one tweeted.
The scheduled show was part of the boys' On The Road Again tour, which saw them play three sold-out dates in Dublin at the weekend.
The band has had a turbulent year with Zayn Malik leaving in March to pursue a solo career. In August the band announced they'd be taking a break next year, their first since they were formed on X Factor in 2010.
