I wish Westlife had taken a One Direction-style break, reveals Brian McFadden
Brian McFadden says it's brilliant that One Direction are taking a break and he wishes Westlife had done the same when they were at the height of their fame.
The Artane native famously left the group three weeks before their world tour in 2004.
"I think One Direction's hiatus is brilliant - go explore things on their own, enjoy the solo life, then get back together," he said.
"Maybe if Westlife had done that, I would have stayed in the band a bit longer. I think it's a really good idea, they're gonna realise how amazing it's been for them.
"It didn't work out like that for us but I think it'll make the band last a lot longer than if they just carried on and on and they probably will get back together. It'll be much easier because they haven't broken up," he added.
Brian was speaking to Stephen Byrne on 2fm to promote his new single, Call On Me Brother.
"We've always written love songs but this is an ode to my mates," he explained.
"It's a song to my male friends, my boy friends, it's just me giving a nod to my mates. They've always been there for me since the beginning.
"People come and go in your life but your friends will be there forever," he added. The song has also garnered some high-profile fans including Real Madrid player Gareth Bale.
"Myself and Gareth were playing golf in Spain the day it came out," he explained.
"He went home, downloaded it, rang me and said, 'I love it.'
"He tweeted everyone telling them how much he liked it, which was amazing," he added.
The 35-year-old plans to release a few singles before the end of the year and says he's putting the final touches to his upcoming album.
Meanwhile, he has been going through an amicable split with his ex-wife Vogue Williams. The couple, who married in 2012, announced their split earlier this summer but still live together in London and have been on a number of nights out in the past week.
Vogue also shared a picture of her on a "girls day out" with Brian's children, Molly (13) and Lilly Sue (12), from his previous marriage to Kerry Katona.
Instead of going their separate ways when they called it quits, Brian says they're still "best friends".
"We're still great friends, I think people a lot of people have their break ups and go their separate ways and they don't talk but me and her are genuinely still best friends," he said.
