Fairytale Of New York tops list of drivers’ Christmas songs

Fairytale Of New York by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl has been voted the tune motorists most want to listen to while driving at Christmas.

But older drivers would rather give the 22-year-old hit a miss, as well as other favourite Christmas driving songs in a poll compiled by the AA and Populus.

As many as 29pc of drivers over 65 said they did not want to hear any of the top 10 tunes, which included Chris Rea's Driving Home For Christmas (in second place) and Bing Crosby's White Christmas (third).

John Lennon's Happy Christmas (War Is Over), which was in ninth position, was most popular in Northern Ireland.

Most support for Sir Cliff Richard came from drivers over 55, but their backing was not quite enough to get Sir Cliff's Mistletoe And Wine into the top 10.
