The talented son of Kathryn Thomas's fiance will be appearing on the BBC show Let It Shine tonight as he competes for the chance to be in Gary Barlow's new stage show.

Knocklyon native Conor McLoughlin (21) is hoping to be chosen as one of the five leads in a group that Barlow is creating for his new Take That musical.

One of the biggest current Saturday night shows, last week's episode was watched by 5.3m viewers as it continues its ratings battle with The Voice UK.

Hosted by Graham Norton, this evening's episode will see Conor taking to the stage at Manchester's MediaCityUK in Salford in a bid to impress celebrity judges Gary, Danii Minogue, Amber Reilly and Martin Kemp.

The young singer previously worked in Merrion Row restaurant Hugo's and now works in Union8 in Kilmainham, which is co-owned by his restaurateur father Padraig McLoughlin, Kathryn's fiance.

Conor spent five years training with the Helen Jordan Stage School in Dublin and has also busked on Grafton Street as he chases his dream of becoming a big star.

He described tonight's audition as possibly being his "big break".

"Let it Shine is a huge opportunity for me so I'm taking a break from the restaurant to give it my best shot," he said.

"I know that I have a tough battle ahead of me on the UK show, being from Ireland, but hopefully people will likewhat they see and hear.

"I've always been interested in singing and went to the Helen Jordan Stage School for the last five years. Helen is a legend in the business and she gave me one-to-one voice coaching."

Supportive

He added that Kathryn has been "very supportive" in his singing endeavours and has encouraged him to keep going, despite whatever setbacks come his way.

The Operation Transformation presenter and Conor's father got engaged last November after deciding to take their four-year relationship to the next level.

They were staying in Ballyfin House in Laois at the time and Kathryn said that she "cried my eyes out" with the surprise proposal.

They are in no rush to go down the aisle though and she said they are probably looking at getting married in 2018 as they are both so busy this year.
