I'm going solo but there's no Saturday's split - Una Foden

NOTHING fuels split rumours more so than girl band members pursuing solo careers - but that hasn't deterred The Saturdays' Una Foden from hitting the studio solo.

The Tipperary singer has confirmed to the Herald that she is returning to her singer-songwriter roots, without the help of her bandmates.

"I've been in the studio and I've been writing loads," she said.

Since the band announced that they were taking some time off until 2016 they have been forced to dispel mounting speculation that they are finished for good.

For Una (33), it is a perfect opportunity to dabble in something a little different to traditional pop music. Armed with just a guitar, the red-haired beauty is braving it on her own.

"It'll be a bit more acoustic and more like a singer-songwriter kind of thing, that's what I always would have done since I was 12 years old - so I'm going back to doing that," Una explained.

"There'll always be a bit of a pop influence, because that's what I've been doing for years," she added.

Since the band pressed pause on working together, Una has said that they are "100pc not splitting up".

"We wanted to have a rest so we could pursue different projects, before getting back together - probably next year," she said at the time.

But nobody can accuse her of resting on her laurels as she has also signed up to act as a mentor for The Voice of Ireland for the upcoming season.

The busy mum-of-two also hinted that she has some TV projects lined up in the UK, but refused to spill the beans about what they were. Her youngest son, Tadhg, is just six months old, and his big sister, Aoife Belle, is three.

Their mum said that they will return to Ireland to stay with their grandparents in Tipperary during the live shows next spring.

Just who will join Una in the giant red chairs remains a mystery, but she said she hopes Rachel Stevens, Bressie and Westlife's Cian Egan will return for another season.

"I love the two guys and Rachel, we all got on so well, so hopefully [they'll be back]" she said. "It's great to be part of it all again," she said. "It's a really popular show. If it's as successful as last time we'll be happy, with a voice like Patrick's getting discovered. He's set for big things, so to discover someone like him again would be great."

With a hectic schedule looming, Una said she has been enjoying her 'down time' with her husband, England rugby player Ben Foden, and their two kids.

"I'm just trying to enjoy my family life at the minute," she said.

"I'm spending quite a lot of time at home at the moment. taking a bit of time out."

The couple, who wed in Tipperary's Kilshane House in 2011, live in London.
